Today we reviewed how variables can be used to represent an unknown amount when writing equations from a verbal sentence. The ability to write an equation from a verbal sentence is needed to solve word problems. When a verbal sentence can be translated into an equation that states a rule for the relationship between certain quantities, the equation is called a formula. It can be used to solve problems about those quantities.
Additionally, we refocused on solving an equation by finding the value of the variable in the equation that makes the equation true. To solve an equation, isolate the variable (with a coefficient of 1) on one side of the equation. Use the Properties of Equality to maintain equivalent equations in each step of the process.
